POSITION TITLE:   Bus Driver

WORK RELATIONSHIPS:  Reports to Director of Transportation

PAY:            $20.50/Hour-After 40 Working Days

Job Description Summary:


Responsible for providing safe, efficient, reliable and on time School Bus Transportation of students over specific routes to and from the school and all programs. The Bus Driver is responsible to ensure the safe and efficient transportation using established projected driving times and route schedules.


Qualifications:
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent required. Must have the ability to secure and maintain required licenses and certifications through the State of Indiana, the Indiana Department of Education and the South Bend Community School Corporation.
Must provide a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit with a class “B” minimum classification, “P” passenger, “S” School Bus and air brake endorsement.
The ability to pass a physical examination and a drug screen required. Valid Indiana driver’s License required with no points preferred. Maintain a personal telephone to ensure communication with the Transportation personnel.


Ability to participate in and successfully complete a 4 week transportation training program. Required to participate in and successfully complete training in First Aid, Bloodborne pathogen, behavior intervention, hazardous materials training and other required safety training as necessary to advance job skills.

Experience:
Candidate will have the ability to get a Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL) with a minimum “B” classification, “P” passenger, “S” school Bus and air brake endorsements and preferred 2 year’s experience with transporting students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities and Requirements:
1.) All drivers will be on time with their established routes and designated bus stops.
2.) Drivers will report to work on time and their scheduled work day(s).
3.) Conduct a daily pre-trip and post-trip inspection of your assigned vehicle as required by Transportation leadership.
4.) Drive the established routes and designated bus stops.
5.) Conduct emergency evacuation drills as required.
6.) Instruct passenger, students and riders regarding safety. Manage and direct exuberant behavior characteristics of younger youthful preteen and teenage riders.
7.) Drive defensively under varying traffic and road conditions and in inclement weather.
8.) Administer disciplinary procedures in keeping with transportation policies.
9.) Be alert and exercise good judgement concerning emergencies and day to day operations.
10.) Shall be able to conduct a bus evacuation drill as required by Transportation Management
11.) Keep accurate records & reports as required, all communication must be submitted in a legible condition, turned in at the specified date & time.
12.) Conduct one’s self as a professional Transportation staff member at all times.
13.) Operate all vehicle lifts as instructed per the Transportation Management.
a.) Secure all equipment that is required for each passenger as instructed with Transportation training.
b.) Be able to lift, store and disassemble / assemble a wheelchair of a maximum weight of 40 pounds and / or other ambulatory devices required by the passenger.
c.) Be able to lift a student / passengers up to a maximum weight of 50 pounds.
14.)Bus drivers shall receive job skills training, annual in service and off site training conducted by the State of Indiana, Department of Education and South Bend School Corp. Transportation.
a.) Drivers will be required to demonstrate the knowledge of the rules and regulations promulgate by local, state and federal agencies. Demonstrate the knowledge of state and local ordinances.

Special Characteristics & Requirement of the position

Candidate must provide a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit with a class “B” minimum classification, “P” passenger, “S” School Bus and airbrake permit. Candidate will show that all 4 tests have been completed prior to the start of training.
Successfully complete the South Bend School Transportation Driver Training course in 4 weeks. Must secure and retain a commercial driver’s License with the appropriate endorsements.
