Position Title:   Building Substitute and Classroom Support Teachers 

 

Positive Overview

The South Bend Empowerment Zone seeks multiple Empowerment Zone Building Substitute and Classroom Support Teachers to provide additional teaching capacity when full-time teachers are out due to various constraints.  Substitute teachers take on classroom duties in case of teacher absence. In this role, they may be responsible for teaching prepared lessons or preparing their own instructional materials. The main duty of a substitute teacher is to ensure that students receive the required instruction according to the Zone school’s curriculum. They also need to maintain student records regarding grades and attendance, assign and grade homework and class assignments, and consult with administrators on their responsibilities during the primary teacher’s absence.

 

This role requires excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as the ability to interpret prepared lessons and successfully instruct students using these materials. Other position requirements are provided below.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • On time arrival is 7:45 am for Coquillard, Harrison, Warren and Wilson Elementary Schools and 8:45am for Navarre Middle School 
  • Remain at school during the entire school day unless excused by the principal or the
    designated representative
  • Maintain, as fully as possible, the established routines and procedures of the school, classroom and position to which assigned
  • Follow lesson plans and directions provided by the teacher
  • Grade student work, if requested by supervisor
  • Support the creation of lessons plans and lesson materials, if requested by supervisor
  • Perform all extra duties for the absent employee as required by the building principal
    (including the taking of student attendance)
  • Perform other duties consistent with the position as may be requested by the principal
    or designated representative
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment,
    materials, and facilities
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and
    conduct, and, for the classroom, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
  • Maintain a professional appearance and conduct personal behavior to serve as an
    example for students
  • Leave a brief summary of the day's activities for the absent employee

 

Position Eligibility and Requirements 

  • Applicants must have 
    • A minimum of a high school diploma
    • Obtain a valid Indiana Substitute Permit - this process can be started upon the hiring process, we will provide you with instructions.

 

Compensation

  • Is contingent up verified transcripts:
    • High School Diploma/GED/HSE- $15.00/hour
    • 30+ College Credits: $15.33/hour 
    • 4-year degree: $18.00/hour
  • Eligible for Health, Dental, and Vision Benefits
