GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Reports to:  Director of Title I & School Learning

Term of Employment: Title I Grant Funding

 

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

  • The Homeless & Foster Care Coordinator will monitor the services for the students experiencing homelessness and students in the foster care system attending SBCSC schools.
  • The liaison supports and advocates for the students experiencing homelessness and students in the foster care system.
  • Collaborates with parents, foster parents, guardians, and other caregivers to eliminate barriers for students experiencing homelessness and students in the foster care system.
  • Assists with the enrollment of students experiencing homelessness and students in the foster care system.
  • Maintains current log of students enrolled at each school who are experiencing homelessness or are in foster care.
  • Monitors all students experiencing homelessness or in the foster care system across the district.
  • Reviews current attendance and grades of SBCSC students experiencing homelessness or in the foster care system on an ongoing basis.
  • Refers students to educational and vocational programs, including (but not limited to) tutoring, mentoring, dropout prevention programs, summer programs, job training, etc.
  • Discusses the students and their needs at staffing and intervention meetings when applicable.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with care providers, service providers, child welfare agencies, school counselors, and school-based staff to ensure that all educational goals for students experiencing homelessness and students in the foster care system are achieved.
  • Serves as SBCSC’s point of contact for issues concerning students experiencing homelessness and students in the foster care system.
  • The liaison travels to the locations of students experiencing homelessness and students in the foster care system.
  • Arranges transportation for students experiencing homelessness and students in the foster care system.
  • Purchases items such as school supplies and clothing for students when needed, either by submitting requisitions to Title I Budget Supervisor or by purchasing items with personal funds and submitting receipts for reimbursement.
  • Maintains communications between schools, students, and parents, foster parents, and other guardians and caregivers.

OPERATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Knows applicable laws and statutes and ensures that SBCSC is in compliance with the McKinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act and Every Student Succeeds Act.
  • Works closely with the Director of Title I & School Learning and Director of African American Student & Parent Services.
  • Assists in preparation of yearly pre-application for Title grants, creates and defends budget for services to students experiencing homelessness and students in the foster care system, partners with community organizations and neighboring Local Education Agencies to complete triennial application for Title VII-B McKinney-Vento funding for students experiencing homelessness.

 POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and experience working with children and families in a field related to education, human services, sociology, or psychology.
  • Demonstrate the ability to collaborate with a team of professionals, problem-solve issues, organize events and meet deadlines.
  • Flexibility of schedule to implement evening meetings and events based on programming needs
  • Demonstrate ability to use computer technology to maintain records, complete equipment inventory, create communication tools and report student progress.

  WORK CONDITIONS:

 

  • Regular travel between school buildings and homeless sites.
  • Availability for after-hours meetings with the parents of students experiencing homelessness and students in the foster care system.
  • On-call availability for emergencies.

 

Evaluation:

 

  • The Director of Title I & School Learning shall complete an annual written evaluation covering the individual’s effectiveness in handling the duties and responsibilities of the position. The basis of the evaluation will be the extent to which the performance responsibilities of the job are successfully handled and the extent to which annual action plans and job goals are met.
